Signs that need a call today
Three symptoms should not wait for a scheduled appointment. If you see any of them, switch off the circuit at the panel if you can do so safely, and call.
- A burning or fishy smell from an outlet, switch, or the panel
- Scorch marks, discolouration, or visible sparking
- A panel that is hot to the touch or buzzing loudly
Signs that mean something is wrong
These are not emergencies, but they are not normal either. Each one has a cause worth finding before it develops.
- Breakers that trip repeatedly, or that you have learned to work around
- Lights that dim noticeably when a large appliance starts
- Outlets or switch plates that feel warm
- A panel that still uses screw-in fuses rather than breakers
What these symptoms usually indicate
A breaker that trips is doing its job. Repeated tripping means either the circuit is genuinely overloaded, or there is a fault it keeps detecting. Replacing the breaker without finding out which is a way to remove protection rather than fix a problem.
Warmth is the one people underestimate most. A connection that has loosened generates heat, which degrades it further, which generates more heat. That cycle is a common precursor to an electrical fire, and it develops over months.
Two panel brands worth knowing about
If your home has a Federal Pacific Stab-Lok or a Zinsco panel, that is worth taking seriously regardless of whether you have symptoms. Both have documented histories of breakers failing to trip under fault conditions.
Many home inspectors flag them and some insurers ask about them. Replacement is a planned expense rather than an emergency, but it is not one to defer indefinitely.
Older wiring around Greater Boston
The housing stock in this area means knob-and-tube, cloth-insulated cable, and 1960s aluminium branch circuits all turn up regularly. None of them is automatically dangerous, and none of them should be assumed fine either.
What matters is condition and how they have been modified. Knob-and-tube that has been spliced into with modern cable by someone unqualified is a different situation from an untouched original run.
