Pick the job closest to yours for detail on how it works, what affects the cost, and what happens on the day.
When to call an electrician
Most home electrical problems give warning long before they become serious. The difficulty is that the early signs are easy to live with, so they get tolerated for months.
If you recognise any of the following, it is worth a call rather than a wait.
- Breakers that trip repeatedly, or that will not reset
- Outlets or switch plates that feel warm to the touch
- Lights that dim when a large appliance starts
- A panel that buzzes, or that still uses screw-in fuses
- Two-prong outlets, or three-prong outlets with no ground
- Any burning smell, scorching, or sparking
- Adding a car charger, heat pump, hot tub, or finished basement
Burning smells are not a wait-and-see problem
A burning or fishy smell, visible scorching, or sparking needs a same-day response. Switch off the circuit at the panel if you can do so safely, then call rather than submitting a form.
How we work
The complaints people have about electricians are rarely about the wiring. They are about not knowing the price, not knowing when someone will arrive, and finding out afterwards that no permit was pulled.
- 1
Tell us what is happening
Describe the problem or the project. For most planned work we can scope it without a visit; where a visit is needed, we schedule it.
- 2
Fixed price before we start
You get the price in writing. Estimates are free for planned work such as panels, chargers, lighting, and remodels. Diagnostic call-outs carry a service fee that is credited toward the repair.
- 3
Permits pulled, work done
Where the job requires a permit we file it with your town's wiring inspector and attend the inspection. You get an arrival window rather than a whole day.
- 4
Tested and explained
The work is tested, the site is cleaned, and we show you what changed before we leave.
Older homes around Greater Boston
The housing stock in this area means we regularly work on wiring that predates current practice. None of it is automatically an emergency, but all of it changes how a job should be approached.
We tell you plainly what you have, whether it is safe, and whether a repair is sound or the section should be replaced.
- Knob-and-tube wiring, often partly replaced and spliced into
- Aluminium branch circuits from the 1960s and 1970s
- Cloth-insulated cable with embrittled insulation
- Federal Pacific and Zinsco panels, both with known breaker concerns
- Ungrounded circuits behind three-prong outlets
- Undersized 60 and 100 amp services in homes that have long outgrown them
Straight answers
The things people ask most before booking. If yours is not here, ask it and a licensed electrician will answer.
- Do you charge for an estimate? +
- Estimates are free for planned work such as panel upgrades, EV chargers, lighting, and remodels. Diagnostic call-outs, where the job is finding out what is wrong, carry a service fee that is credited toward the repair if you go ahead.
- Do I need a permit for electrical work in Massachusetts? +
- Most work beyond a straight fixture swap requires a permit and an inspection by your town's wiring inspector. We pull permits as part of the job. Unpermitted work causes problems during a home sale and can complicate an insurance claim.
- Are you licensed and insured? +
- Yes. We are a licensed Massachusetts electrical contractor and carry full liability insurance. We are happy to provide our license number and a certificate of insurance before work begins.
- How quickly can you come out? +
- For safety issues such as burning smells, scorching, or sparking, call rather than emailing and we will prioritise it. Planned work is normally scheduled within days. Our standard hours are Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
- Can you work on knob-and-tube or aluminium wiring? +
- Yes, and both are common in this area. Neither is automatically an emergency, but both need specific handling. We will tell you honestly whether a repair is sound or whether that section is better replaced.
- Will my project qualify for a Mass Save rebate? +
- It might, particularly where the work is tied to heat pumps or electrification. We are a Mass Save partner and check eligibility before you commit. Rebates generally require the permit pulled and the inspection passed.
- What areas do you serve? +
- Greater Boston and the MetroWest towns, including Framingham, Natick, Wellesley, Newton, Needham, Ashland, Holliston, Sherborn, Weston, Marlborough, Sudbury, and Wayland. If you are just outside, call and ask.
