Level 1 versus Level 2, and why it matters

Every electric car comes with a Level 1 cord that plugs into a standard household outlet. It works, but it adds only a few miles of range per hour. For a daily driver that is rarely enough.

A Level 2 charger runs on a 240 volt circuit, the same kind that feeds an electric dryer or range. That is the difference between topping up and actually refilling overnight.

What changes with a dedicated circuit

  • Charging speed measured in hours rather than days
  • A circuit sized for continuous load, not shared with other outlets
  • Hardwired or a dedicated NEMA 14-50 receptacle, depending on the unit
  • GFCI protection appropriate to the installation type
  • A clean run to the garage, driveway, or carport

Can your panel handle a charger?

This is the question that decides the whole job, and it is the one most quotes skip. A Level 2 charger is a large continuous load. Adding one to a panel that is already near capacity is how breakers start tripping and how inspections fail.

We run a load calculation on your actual service before quoting. Sometimes the answer is that your existing panel is fine. Sometimes it means a panel upgrade first. Either way you find out before you commit, not after the charger arrives.

Some chargers support load sharing or can be set to a lower amperage. Where a panel is borderline, that is often cheaper than upgrading the service. We look at this before recommending bigger work.

    We look at the panel, the parking spot, and the route between them. That gives us the circuit size, the wire run, and any obstacles like finished walls or a detached garage.

    Fixed quote and permit

    You get the price in writing, including the charger if you want us to supply it. Once approved we file the permit with your town's wiring inspector.

    Installation

    We run the new circuit, mount the charger, and terminate everything to code. Most single-charger jobs are done in a day.

    Testing and inspection

    We verify the charger communicates with your vehicle and delivers full rated current, then meet the inspector for sign-off.

Choosing a charger

We install whatever unit you choose, and we are happy to recommend one. The right answer depends less on brand than on how you drive and what your panel allows.

  • Amperage: 32A suits most drivers, 48A only helps if your car accepts it
  • Hardwired versus plug-in, which affects outdoor rating and portability
  • Cable length, which decides how you can park
  • Wi-Fi and scheduling, useful if your utility has off-peak rates
  • Load sharing, if a second vehicle is likely
  • Outdoor rating where the unit is exposed to weather

Permits and inspection

EV charger circuits require a permit and an inspection by your town's wiring inspector. We file it and attend the inspection as part of the job.

This is not paperwork for its own sake. An unpermitted 240 volt circuit is a problem when you sell the house, and it can complicate an insurance claim. It is also usually a condition of any rebate.

Rebates and incentives

Federal tax credits and utility programs can offset part of a home charger installation. Eligibility turns on your property, the equipment chosen, and the program year, so we check what applies to you rather than quoting a number that may have changed.

Programs generally require the permit pulled and the inspection passed before funds are released. Since we handle both, nothing gets held up on a technicality.

A straightforward installation near an adequate panel is usually a single day. It takes longer if the panel needs upgrading first, if the run to the parking spot is long, or if the circuit has to reach a detached garage.
Do I need to upgrade my panel to add a charger?

Not always. It depends on your service size and how much of it existing loads already use. We run a load calculation first. Where a panel is borderline, dialling the charger down or using load sharing is often enough.
Should I get a plug-in charger or hardwired?

Hardwired is generally better outdoors and for higher amperage units. Plug-in on a NEMA 14-50 receptacle is easier to swap or take with you. We fit either, and the difference in installation cost is usually small.
Can you install a charger in a detached garage?

Do you supply the charger or do I buy it?
