What a smart home electrician actually does
Plenty of smart devices install themselves. The ones worth having, the ones built into the walls, need an electrician because they change the wiring rather than sit on top of it.
Our work is the layer underneath: the switches, the neutral conductors, the dedicated circuits, and the network cabling that makes everything else reliable.

The neutral wire problem
This is the issue that stops most smart switch projects in older homes, and it is worth understanding before you buy anything.
A traditional switch only interrupts the hot conductor. It has no neutral, because a mechanical switch does not need power to sit there. A smart switch does need power, continuously, to run its radio and processor. In many older Greater Boston homes, there is simply no neutral in the switch box.

- Pull a neutral to the switch box where the wall or attic allows access
- Fit switches designed to work without a neutral, within their limits
- Move the control to the fixture rather than the switch
- Use a lighting control system that keeps switches as inputs only
- Tell you honestly when a room is not worth the disruption
Check this before you buy
If you are about to order a box of smart switches, ask us to check a switch box first. Finding out there is no neutral after the boxes arrive is the most common wasted-money moment in this category.

Building it so it keeps working
The complaint we hear most about smart homes is not that they failed, but that they became unreliable. Lights respond after a pause, a scene half-triggers, a device drops off the network.
Most of that traces back to wireless mesh doing work that cable should be doing. Where it is practical, we hardwire the backbone and use wireless only at the edges.

Permits and code
Swapping a switch for a smart switch on existing wiring generally does not need a permit. Running new conductors, adding circuits, or altering the wiring does, and it is inspected by your town's wiring inspector.
Low-voltage network cabling follows its own rules, and we install it to those rather than treating it as unregulated.

- Do I need to do the whole house at once? +
- No. Most projects are better staged, starting with the rooms you use most. We plan the wiring so later phases connect without redoing earlier work.
- Can you wire a smart thermostat? +
- Yes. Most smart thermostats need a common wire, and many older systems do not have one. Running that wire is a routine part of this work.
- Do you install network cabling as well? +
- Yes. Hardwired Ethernet to access points and equipment is what makes the difference between a system that responds instantly and one that hesitates. We install structured cabling as part of the same project.
