Why it takes weeks, not days
The physical installation is two to three days. The project around it is longer, and the delay is almost never the electrician.
Equipment lead time, permit processing, and utility or gas company scheduling all sit outside our control. We can tell you honestly where the time goes so nothing comes as a surprise.

Stage one: assessment and design
Everything downstream depends on getting this right. Two questions decide the project: what has to keep running, and where can the unit legally and practically sit.
What we work out on the site visit
- The circuits you need running, and their combined load
- Whether whole-home or essential-circuits is the better fit
- Generator placement, with clearances from openings and property lines
- Distance from the unit to the panel, which sets cable size
- Fuel type, and whether gas supply or meter capacity is adequate
- Whether the existing panel can take a transfer switch as-is
- Any town noise ordinance or setback rule that affects placement
Placement is decided by rules, not preference
Clearances from windows, doors, vents, and property lines are set by code and sometimes by local ordinance. If the spot you had in mind does not comply, better to know at the site visit than at inspection.
Stage two: permits and ordering
Once the quote is approved we file permits and order equipment in parallel, because both take time and neither depends on the other.
Generator installation normally needs an electrical permit and a gas permit. Processing time varies considerably between towns in Greater Boston, which is the main reason we cannot promise a single timeline for everyone.

Stage three: installation

Day one: base and placement
The pad is set or the composite base positioned and levelled, and the generator is placed. Where concrete is poured, curing time may add a day before anything can be mounted.

Day one to two: electrical
The transfer switch is installed at or beside the panel, circuits are moved to the backed-up side where an essential-circuits configuration is used, and the feed to the generator is run.

Day two: fuel connection
The gas line is run and connected, or the propane tank set and connected. Line sizing depends on distance and the unit's demand, and undersized line is a common cause of running faults.

Day two to three: termination and pre-test
Everything is terminated, the unit is started for the first time, and we check operation before the inspector attends.
Stage four: inspection and commissioning
Inspection and commissioning are where the installation becomes a working system rather than an installed object.
We simulate an outage rather than just starting the unit. That confirms the transfer switch operates, the generator carries actual load, and control returns cleanly when utility power comes back.

After handover
A standby generator is not a fit-and-forget appliance. It runs a weekly self-test on its own, but it needs an annual service to stay reliable, and the battery is a consumable.
