Signs a system needs replacing
Access systems tend to fail slowly. They keep opening doors long after they have stopped being manageable, which is why the decision gets deferred until something forces it.

Revocation failure is the urgent one
If lost or returned credentials cannot actually be revoked, your access control is decorative. Every fob ever issued still opens the door. That is the point at which replacement stops being a budget conversation.
What can usually be kept
The expensive part of an access system is rarely the electronics. It is the cable in the walls and the hardware in the doors. A good retrofit reuses as much of that as it safely can.
We survey what is there before quoting a replacement, because a proposal that assumes a full rewire when the existing cable is fine is a proposal that costs you money for nothing.

Keeping doors working during the change
In an occupied building the constraint is not technical, it is that people have to get in and out throughout. A changeover that leaves a main entrance unusable for a day is not acceptable in most properties.
We phase the work door by door and keep the old system running on doors that have not been converted yet, so there is never a period where nobody can enter.

Intercom replacement in multi-unit buildings
Older buildings around Boston commonly have handset intercoms wired to every unit. When those fail, replacing like for like means running new cable to every apartment, which is disruptive and expensive.
Modern video intercoms route calls to residents' phones instead, which means the work concentrates at the entrance rather than throughout the building. In an occupied building that difference is usually decisive.
